Building an industry, honestly

The World Energy3 Forum is a nonprofit trade association for companies generating clean power at the point of use. Our mission is to decentralize the grid: power made where it's needed, or inside the device it runs.

What the Forum does

  1. 1

    Map the field

Find every company building decentralized, continuous clean power, wherever it is, and keep a current profile of each one.

  2. 2

    Assess the evidence

Record what each company claims, then check it: visit labs, watch demonstrations, review test reports, and publish what we find, good or bad.

  3. 3

    Teach the market

Most investors don't know this industry exists. We explain the technologies plainly, including what's still unproven.

  4. 4

    Bring it together

Convene companies, investors, labs and policymakers at the annual Forum and through introductions year-round.

A neutral third party

The Forum doesn't build or sell generation technology, and it doesn't rank one company's claims above another's without evidence. Every company is held to the same standard and described the same way: what it says, what it has shown, and what independent parties have confirmed.

We start open. This field has a long history of claims that were dismissed without being tested, and of claims that didn't survive testing. Both happen. Our job is to find out which is which.

  • What it says

The company's own claims, recorded as stated.

  • What it has shown

Demonstrations, data and documents we've reviewed.

  • What others have confirmed

Independent labs, and our own measurements on site.

How we assess

Every company profile carries two labels: how far the technology has come, and how far the evidence for it goes. They're separate on purpose. A company can be selling units with no independent test, or have a validated lab result and nothing for sale.

  1. 1

    Claimed

Only the company's own statements so far.

  2. 2

    Demonstrated

Shown working in public, on video or at installations, but not yet tested by an independent party.

  3. 3

    Independently validated

Tested by a named third party (a lab, university or independent engineer), with the result on record.

Stage: how far the technology has come

  1. Concept. An idea or design, not yet built.

  2. R&D. Lab work and early experiments.

  3. Prototype. Working hardware built and shown.

  4. Pilot. Units running with early customers or partners.

  5. In market. Selling or installing for customers.

Site visits

The Forum goes to see the technology in person. A site visit means meeting the team, watching the hardware run, and, where the company allows it, taking our own measurements with our own instruments. Each visit is written up as a report for members: who went, what we saw, what we measured and under what conditions, and whether it changed the company's evidence status.

Sources and corrections

Most companies in this field are private, so many figures (funding, output, pipeline) come from the companies themselves. Profiles say so when that's the case, and link to public sources where they exist. Companies and readers can send corrections to team@energy3.org.

What this is not

Energy3 Intel is research and education. It is not investment advice, a recommendation to buy or sell anything, or an offer of securities. Do your own diligence, with your own advisers.
